How do I create a GPS Location challenge?
Creating a GPS Location challenge
GPS challenges are a great way to get players moving and exploring real-world places during your event. They require the player to physically be within a certain radius of a target location in order to complete the challenge.
Follow these steps to create a GPS challenge in Thrillify:
1. Add a new challenge
In the Thrillify Backstage web portal, go to the Challenges tab while editing your Event. Click Add -> New.
You’ll see a form like this:

2. Fill in the challenge details
- Name: Give your challenge a clear and descriptive title. This will be shown to players in the app.
- Description (optional): Provide a hint or instructions, such as where to go or what to look for at the location.
- Challenge Type: Select GPS Challenge.
- Location: Click Edit Location to set the target coordinates and acceptable radius.
Clicking the “Edit Location” button opens the map selector:

You can:
- Search for a destination using the search bar
- Select a point manually on the map
- Adjust the radius to control how close players must be to complete the challenge
The accepted radius can be as small as 50 meters or as large as 2000 meters.
- Points: Set how many points players earn for successfully checking in at the location.
- External ID (optional): Use this if you’re syncing with external tools.
- Labels (optional): Add tags to help organize your challenges.
Click Save once you’re done.
What do GPS challenges look like in the app?
Here’s what the GPS challenge looks like for players in the app:

Players must tap Check In when they believe they’re at the right spot. If they are within the defined radius, the challenge will be completed and they’ll earn the points.
If they’re too far away, they’ll be shown a message encouraging them to get closer before trying again.
Tips for effective GPS challenges
- Choose public landmarks or safe areas that are easy to access
- Use the description to help guide players to the correct location
- Try testing the challenge yourself using your phone to verify accuracy
- Avoid locations with poor GPS signal (e.g., indoors or underground)
GPS challenges are great for scavenger hunts, sightseeing tours, or encouraging players to explore their surroundings during your event.
